Enlisted in Pitt County on April 20, 1861. Wounded in the left leg and right hand at Wilderness, Virginia, May 5, 1864. Reported absent on light duty from September-October, 1864 through February 1865. Records of the Federal Provost Marshall indicate he was a deserter who took the Oath of Allegiance at or near Washington. D.C., on or about April 12, 1865.
NOTE: NC Troops spells the name "Quartermus" while the name on the family marker is "Quartermas".
